Scope and Content

Suffolk collections of Thomas Leman in two volumes:

  • c. 5 contains a copy, made by Leman in 1787 from Cambridge, Caius College MS. 554, of William Harvey's 1561 visitation of Suffolk; and pedigrees of Suffolk families, with arms in trick, and an index of families
  • c. 6 continues the pedigrees of Suffolk families, 1811, and includes further miscellaneous heraldic collections.

Administrative / Biographical History

Thomas Leman (1751-1826) was an antiquary. Leman graduated BA from Emmanuel College, Cambridge in 1774, was chosen fellow of Clare Hall, took Holy orders, and proceded to MA in 1778; he was readmitted to Emmanuel College as Dixie (bye) fellow in 1783. He was a founding member and original trustee of the Bath Literary and Scientific Institution. See the Dictionary of National Biography for further details.

Custodial History

Each volume has the bookplate of Leman, 1797, and the label of the Bath Literary and Scientific Institution, to which Leman bequeathed it.
