Lionel Lukin paved the way for the first purpose-built lifeboat when he designed the world's first unsinkable boat and patented it in 1785. The first boat that specialised as a lifeboat was tested on the River Tyne on January 29, 1790, built by Henry Greathead. On 28 February 1823, Sir William Hillary made an impassioned appeal to the nation, calling for a service dedicated to saving lives at sea. That service was to become the RNLI founded in 1824 and lifeboat crews and lifeguards have saved over 140,000 lives.
