Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
With the merger of Glasgow Polytechnic and The Queen’s College, Glasgow, Scotland, in 1993 to form Glasgow Caledonian University, the Queen’s College Student Representatives Council and Glasgow Polytechnic Students Association merged to form Glasgow Caledonian University Students’ Association. The Association is a charitable institution within Caledonian University and a body within the University’s Articles of Association.
The Students’ Association is a self-governing body through which students are directly represented on most University committees. The office bearers are elected annually from the University’s student population, and student representatives are on the Course boards, Faculty boards, the Academic board and Governing Body of the university. Within the Association, there are committees for entertainment, welfare and publications. Students can be elected onto the Student Representatives Council (SRC) and executive committee. The various office bearers are responsible for upholding the Association’s policies and are ultimately responsible to the SRC and Annual General Meeting.
The Students Union building houses the SRC offices and various facilities including snack bar, pool room, pizza bar, TV, disco and three bars.
Glasgow Caledonian Sports Union exists as part of the main students association with the specific aim of helping and promoting student-led sport, recreation clubs and societies within the University. In 2000 , over 22 sports clubs existed within the union ranging from traditional sports such as rugby and hockey, to more extreme sports such as snowboarding and sub-aqua. The Sports Union is able to provide insurance, equipment and minibuses to its members who pay an annual subscription. The Union also provides affiliation to major sporting governing bodies and arranges tournaments at a local and national level.
The Students’ Association also supports cultural and interest based societies through the General Council for Clubs and Societies who helps to set-up and run societies and allocates budgets. Clubs and societies cover a whole range of areas, including course-based and political societies to general interest societies.
