Stanley Middleton was born in Bulwell, Nottinghamshire on 1 August 1919, the third and final son of Thomas and Elizabeth Middleton. His father was a railway worker. Stanley was educated at High Pavement School, Bulwell and University College Nottingham where he studied English and French. After the second world war, Middleton returned to High Pavement School as a teacher, becoming head of the English Department in 1958.
Middleton began writing while at University College Nottingham and contributed a short story to the student magazine, Gong. While a teacher in Bulwell, he worked on novels in his leisure time and in 1958, Hutchinson published A Short Answer. A further 36 of his novels were published up to 1999. Middleton was co-winner of the Booker Prize in 1974 with Holiday.
