Administrative / Biographical History
Andrew Patrick Curran was born in Glasgow on 6 September 1917 . He attended the University of Glasgow between 1935 and 1940 and studied within the Science and Medicine faculties. He gained his BSc in 1937 and his MD ChB in 1940. In 1941 , he joined the Royal Army Medical Corp, leaving in 1946 in order to study Public Health at the University of Glasgow for a year. Between 1948 and 1956 he served in various roles as Assistant Medical Officer in Oldham (1948), Deputy Medical Officer in Luton (1951) and Deputy Medical Officer in West Ham (1954). In 1956 he became a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Public Health, University of Glasgow, where he served until his retirement in 1982. He received some honourary degrees from the Royal College of Physicians of London, as well as the Papal decoration of the order of St Sylvester. He died on 8 January1997 .
