Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
The Society of Post Office Engineering Inspectors was founded in 1910. In 1942 it amalgamated with the Society of Post Office Engineering Chief Inspectors and became the Society of Post Office Engineering Inspectorate. In 1947 some staffs from the Hull Telephone Corporation were assimilated and the name was changed to the Society of Telecommunication Engineers. This society amalgamated with the Telecommunication Traffic Officers' Association in 1969 to form the Association of Post Office Executives. An instrument of amalgamation was effected with the Society of Post Office Engineers in 1972 when the name of the organisation was again changed to the Society of Post Office Executives. In 1975 the Telecommunications Sales Superintendents' Association transferred its engagements to the society. From 1982/3 the union was known as the Society of Telecom Executives. The union changed its name to Connect in January 2000. In 2010 Connect merged with Prospect and became the communications sector of Prospect.
