Administrative / Biographical History
Newport Borough Council came into existence on 1 April 1974 as one of the five districts of the new county of Gwent. The new Borough of Newport consisted of the former County Borough of Newport and much of Caerleon Urban District and Magor and St Mellons Rural District. It had an area of 70 square miles and a population of about 130,000. The Council comprised 47 elected councillors, including a Mayor and Council Leader. Their work was overseen by various committees, including Policy & Resources, Planning, Housing, Leisure Services, Environment and Economic Development. The principal officers employed by the Council were the Chief Executive, Director of Resources, Director of Works, Director of Community Services and the Director of Development. Newport Borough Council was abolished in 1996. It was succeeded by Newport County Borough which combined the functions of the Borough Council and Gwent County Council.
