Scope and Content

The archive consists of 7 boxes of correspondence, photographs, pamphlets and newspaper cuttings related to issues of interest to Jane Cobden Unwin.

Administrative / Biographical History

Emma Jane Catherine Cobden was born in 1851, the daughter of Richard Cobden, MP. She was elected to the London County Council in 1889, and strove throughout her life for recognition of the rights of minorities and liberty for all, tackling such controversial issues as Irish Independence, the rights of indigenous peoples in South Africa, Eastern Europe and Russia, and womens' suffrage. She married Thomas Fisher Unwin, a publisher. She died in 1949.

Arrangement

The collection is divided into four boxes of correspondence, arranged chronologically, addressed to either Jane Cobden Unwin or Thomas Fisher Unwin, and three miscellaneous boxes, arranged chronologically, which contain newspaper cuttings, pamphlets and photographs.
