Scope and Content

Comprises: (1) Autograph manuscript letters concerning the estate of Lieutenant-Colonel Christopher Clarges, who died in Java in 1811, dated between 1812 and 1824; (2) Autograph manuscript letters concerning Devonshire Penrose Hawkes and his family, dated between 1838 and 1875; (3) Miscellaneous legal and other documents concerning Devonshire Penrose Hawkes and his family, dated between 1833 and 1926.

Administrative / Biographical History

The collection concerns members of the Pearson family from the early nineteenth century almost to the present, and, in particular, wider branches of it, namely, the Clarges and the Hawkes.
