Joan Everest Archive, 1916-1996

This collection holds mainly family photographs EVE/FAM; travel slides photographed abroad and in the United Kingdom by Joan Everest JH/TRA; and a record of Joan and Anthony Millachip's wartime service EVE/WAR. The latter series contains a photograph album showing Joan and colleagues at St. Bartholomew's Hospital where she was employed on general duties in 1941. Later, Joan was a Private in the Anti-Aircraft Military Transport Company [1st A.A.M.T. Coy A.T.S.] Included are photographs of her and her colleagues; her identification card for mechanical transport drivers; and a ration card. Family photographs of Joan's cousins John Hill and Betty Haynes are also included in this album. Tony Millachip's service in the Middle East includes activities of the Mountain Warfare Training Centre High Altitude Rock Climbing School; Winston Churchill at the Teheran Conference in December 1943; the "Big Three" in Teheran; boy King Faisal II of Iraq inspecting Sikh troops; and a trip to Rome. Also included are press cuttings, printed ephemera, and loose photographs.

Joan Everest was born on 5 September 1916, the only child of Eric H.H. Everest and Kate Elizabeth (Toi) Scott-Miller. Her father's sister was the actress Barbara Everest, and Mount Everest was named after her ancestor Sir George Everest (1790-1866) Surveyor-General of India. Joan was also cousin to John Edward Bernard Hill (MP), their mothers being sisters. Joan lived in Malaya, Kenya and England. She married Henry John Anthony Millachip in February 1951, they had no children. Joan died in May 1996.

This personal collection of slides, photographs and papers were developed, collected and kept by Joan Everest throughout her life. On her death, it was passed on to her cousin, John Edward Bernard Hill, at Watermill Farm, Wenhaston in Suffolk. When Mr Hill's papers were deposited at the University of East Anglia, this collection was also taken in.
