Scope and Content

Records of the parish of Aberystruth, 1773-1919, including poor rate assessment books, 1848-1852; parish vestry minute and account books, 1773-1856; Churchwardens' accounts, 1897-1919.

Administrative / Biographical History

During the late Middle Ages the parish became increasingly important as a unit of civil administration. From the 16th century unpaid parish officers were responsible for keeping the peace, repairing roads and assisting the poor, by means of a rate levied on the inhabitants of the parish. Prior to 1894, monthly parish vestry meetings dealt with ecclesiastical matters, rates, and local issues. Parish councils were established by the Local Government Act 1894. Community councils replaced parish councils under the local government reorganization in 1974. The parish of Aberystruth was in the county of Monmouthshire.

Arrangement
