Scope and Content

Lithograph entitled "Islands on the Seine" by Albert Thomas Roberts. The work shows part of the river bank and the water in the foreground, looking towards an island of trees. The lithograph appears to be based on a charcoal sketch. It is initialled in the bottom right corner: ATR.

An accompanying label gives the title and the inscription: Presented in remembrance to his colleague Mr A F Bryan, Xmas 1923, MWR . Arthur Francis Bryan was an architect and known pupil of the School of Art, while MWR is likely to be Roberts' widow.

Administrative / Biographical History

Albert Thomas Roberts was born in Leicester in 1868. In 1883, at the age of 17, he enrolled at the Leicester School of Art. He became an assistant teacher in 1891, rising to become Second Master from 1906 to 1920 and then Principal from 1920 to March 1923.

Roberts specialised in lithography, typography and design relating to the printing trades and was Head of the Printing School. He frequently travelled to France and was influenced by French artistic schools such as the Barbizon movement.

At the beginning of March 1923 Roberts fell ill with abdominal troubles. He was thought to be improving but died suddenly on the 17th March. The Leicester Mercury noted that Mr Roberts was a most able headmaster of a very successful School, Leicester is the poorer by his removal (21 March 1923).
