Letters from Kotane describing Kimberley (1935 March), describing conditions in British Bechuanaland and condemning British and Boer imperialism (1935 March): letters from Moscow giving political instructions using the pseudonym J. W. de Miste. Also includes undated covering letter (c1990s) from a member of the Institute giving background to the correspondence.

Administrative / Biographical History

Moses Kotane was the leader of the South African Communist Party from 1939 until his death in 1978. He was Treasurer General of the African National Congress, 1963-1973.

Note

Hilda Saks (1914-1995) was expelled from the South African Communist Party in 1935. She remained a Communist, however, and later lived in Israel under her married name Hilda Hope.
