Scope and Content

The Celynog Manuscripts are a collection of miscellaneous 17th to 19th century correspondence and papers, consisting of examples of Welsh literature, Welsh poetry, musical compositions, works on Welsh grammar, medical recipes, extracts from various newspapers and periodicals, tithe accounts, and genealogical, geographical, historical and political manuscripts. -- The collection also contains manuscripts relating to religion in Wales, with examples of Welsh religious literature, Welsh sermons and hymns, and manuscripts relating to the Welsh Congregational churches, and translations of charters granted to the abbey of Strata Florida.

Richard Williams (1835-1906) of Celynog, Newtown, Montgomeryshire, was an antiquary and historian.

Custodial History

The Celynog Manuscripts were bequeathed to the Welsh library which was being formed at the Univeristy College of Wales, Aberystwyth, as a nucleus for the projected national library for Wales.
