Alec Allen was a commercial traveller from Penarth, who, together with his father, sold fishing tackle across west Wales. Mr Allen and his father were both keen fishermen, and on 28 July 1933 Mr Allen succeeded in catching a 9'2", 388 lb royal sturgeon in the River Towy at Nantgaredig, Carmarthenshire. The sturgeon was offered to the King, but he was not in residence at the time. Mr Allen therefore sold the fish to a fishmonger from Swansea. He continued fishing until his death in 1972 at the age of 77.
