Administrative / Biographical History

Gordon H. Richards (fl. 1920-1950) of Caernarfon, Caernarfonshire, was a slate merchant. The Alexandra, Moeltryfan and Cilgwyn quarries were located in the Nantlle valley, Caernarfonshire. Alexandra Quarry was leased from the Crown by the Alexandra Slate Company Ltd, Llanwnda. It opened in the 1860s and at times employed up to 200 men. Nearby Moeltryfan Quarry was being worked from the 1880s and remained open until the 1970s. During the early 20th century all three were owned by the Amalgamated Slate Association Ltd, Caernarfon.
