Scope and Content

Signed executive council and conference minutes as printed in 'The Ironworkers' Journal', 1899-1914; memorandum by the executive council to be submitted to the Board of Trade departmental committee on the iron and steel industries, 1916; puddlers' rates agreements with firms in Warrington, 1901-1912; 'The Ironworkers' Journal', 1887-1916.

Administrative / Biographical History

This union was formed in 1887 as the effective successor of the Amalgamated Malleable Ironworkers of Great Britain, although the latter was not formally dissolved until 1891. In 1896 it was the largest and most representative union in the industry, covering both wrought iron and steel workers in the Midlands, the north of England and Cumberland. In 1913 it joined and provided the secretary for the Iron and Steel Trades Federation and in 1917 it became part of the British Iron, Steel and Kindred Trades Association (BISAKTA), the 'central association' of the Iron and Steel Trades Confederation (ISTC).
