179 x 131 mm. An albumen print (possibly by A. Cameron) mounted on card. The pencilled caption on the reverse reads: '26 February 1875. (?)Rice Villa. Pieter Maritzburg. A. Cameron.' However, on the side of the building is painted 'Marine Villa Boarding House. B. Winder,' and this accords with the entry in the 'Natal Almanac Directory and Register 1875' which gives Mrs. Winder as the proprietress of the Marine Villa Hotel in Gardiner Street, Durban (facing the bay).
The view shown here is one looking across the garden towards the two-storied house, with a woman and an Indian servant standing on the verandah. It is possible that the photograph shows a house in Pietermaritzburg and that the sign on the side of the house is merely an advertisement, though this seems unlikely.
