Scope and Content

Solly Zuckerman was not a member of the Committee, but as Chief Scientific Adviser to HM Government received copies of the minutes and papers.

The file of reports (SZ/CMR/3) contains the following published reports of the Committee: A Review of the scope and problems of scientific and technological manpower, HMSO, 1965, Cmnd 2800; Interim report of the working group on manpower parameters for scientific growth, HMSO, 1966, Cmnd 3102; Report of the 1965 triennial manpower survey of engineers, technologists, scientists and technical supporting staff, HMSO, 1966, Cmnd 3103; and Education and training requirements for the electrical and mechanical manufacturing industries, HMSO, 1966.

The content of this series is complementary to that in Series SZ/ACSP.

Administrative / Biographical History

The Committee was established on 4 February 1965 to advise the Secretary of State for Education and the Minister of Technology on manpower resources for science and technology, assuming the functions of the Scientific Manpower Committee of the Advisory Council on Scientific Policy. It was chaired by Sir Willis Jackson.
