Jaggers

'"Jaggers" or the Railway Transport Officer', a story centred on the character John Jaggers, a man of great wealth derived from Rhodesian gold and East Indian rubber who invests successfully in South America's railways. The bulk of the book deals with his work as a Railway Transport Officer in World War I, and includes reflections on world affairs and the Empire. The introduction to the story is dated February 1933, and refers to Foucar's novel 'The wandering clerk or a romance of the British Empire' (London, 1909), in which John Jaggers is also the central character.

Captain George Foucar (d. 1933), who lived in the Argentine, joined the Royal Colonial Institute on 20 January 1914. He died in November 1933.

The manuscript was found in the R.C.S. Strong Room in 1983 where it may have been left after Captain Foucar's death.
