Papers of Harold Edward Beckett (c 1904-fl 1927), student of physics at University College Nottingham, 1921-1927

The collection comprises:

• Correspondence to Harold Beckett from his tutors E.M. Barton and W.H. George. 1925-1927 (MS 302/1);
• Tutors' reports on Harold Beckett's student work written by his tutors E.M. Barton, H.T.H. Piaggio, J.W. Carr and F.S. Kipping. 1921-1923 (MS 302/2);
• References for Harold Beckett written by his tutors E.M. Barton, H.T.H. Piaggio, P.E. Shaw and W.M. George. 1925-1927 (MS 302/3);
• Report on research work for the year 1925-1926, hand-written by Harold Beckett and including graphs and photographs. 1926 (MS 302/4);
• Printed list of students receiving external Bachelor of Science degrees from University of London in 1925 including the name of Harold Beckett. 1926 (MS 302/5);
• Printed engraving of University College Nottingham, presumably once in the possession of Harold Beckett. Undated (MS 302/6).

Harold Edward Beckett was born in about 1904, the son of H.W. Beckett, and went to Southwell Minster's Grammar School in Nottinghamshire. His family lived at Queen Street, Southwell in 1922. Harold passed his matriculation examination in 1920 and in September of the following year, he joined the intermediate science course at University College Nottingham (now The University of Nottingham). On its completion, he remained at the college, embarking upon the University of London accredited Bachelor of Science degree in physics. He graduated with first class honours in 1925. No details of his subsequent career are known.

The collection has been divided by document type into six series. Within these series, items have been arranged chronologically where necessary.
