YMCA Unofficial Papers: Papers of William Edwyn Shipton

Monogrammed leather pocket wallet with W. Edwyn Shipton's diary for 1889 and miscellaneous personal papers.

Information regarding the custodial history of these items has been written by Geoffrey Palmer on the envelope in which the wallet was deposited.

William Edwyn Shipton (1825-1890) was Secretary of the City of London YMCA, 1850 and in 1856, on the resignation of T. H. Tarlton, took over as the National Secretary of the YMCA. As part of this role he managed the triennial world conferences of the YMCA until after his official retirement in 1880. He was the author of several YMCA publications, lectured at Exeter Hall and spoke at YMCA conferences at home and abroad. Notably he helped to withstand the amendment to the 'Paris Basis' at the Paris Conference in 1867.

Deposited by the Young Men's Christian Association, per Geoffrey Palmer, May 2000. Given to Mr Palmer by Keith Torrington, tutor at YMCA College, Kingsgate College, Broadstairs, Kent, run by the YMCA from 1946-1975. Keith Torrington was the son of Mr Torrington who was the General Secretary of the Manchester YMCA up to the 1950s.

The official archive of YMCA England and Wales was deposited in 1998.

The records of Central (London) YMCA were deposited in 2006 (GB 0150 CYMCA)
