Humphrey Owen Jones, chemist and pioneering mountaineer, (1878-1912) and his wife Muriel Gwendolen Jones, ne Edwards, 1886-1912, both died in a climbing accident at Mont Blanc in 1912 while on their honeymoon. Humphrey Owen Jones, from Aberystwyth, was fellow of Clare College and Jacksonian demonstrator in chemistry at Cambridge University. Mrs Muriel Gwendolen Jones was a former student of the University of Wales, Bangor having gained a first class honours in chemistry under Professor K.J.P. Orton. As a fellow of the University of Wales she worked under H.O. Jones' supervision at the University of Cambridge. Their engagement was announced early in the summer of 1912, they married on 1st August of that year and died on the 15th August. They and their guide Julius Truffler fell to their deaths on the Fresnay Glacier, and were buried at Courmayeur.

Dr John Shorter was on the staff of the Chemistry Department at the University of Hull.
