A volume presented to R.E. Ellison in February 1961 by the Executive Committee on behalf of members of the Kaduna-Zaria branch of the Historical Society of Nigeria in appreciation of Ellison's services to the Society. On the inside spine is a letter to Ellison from S.S. Waniko, 4 July 1961, with a photograph showing Ellison at the branch's Annual General Meeting. The titles of the essays are 'Some traditions of warfare in Northern Nigeria', 'The Islamic Brotherhoods in Nigeria', 'Nigeria - the history of its name', 'The Kisra legends (with particular reference to Borgu)', 'The constitution of Northern Nigeria before the advent of the British', 'The American constitution', 'The growth of towns in Nigeria', 'The coat of arms of the Northern Region', 'The death of Mungo Park at Bussa' and 'Some visitors to Kano'. There is a cutting from 'Church times', 1984, comprising an obituary of Ellison.

Administrative / Biographical History
Randall Erskine Ellison (1904-1984), C.M.G., E.D, joined the Colonial Service in 1928, and became Director of Education in Nigeria and British Somaliland. After his retirement he was Assistant Secretary of the Church Assembly, 1962-1963, Chairman of the Church Missionary Society's Africa Committee, 1969-1973, and an Honorary Steward at Westminister Abbey. He died in London on 23 April 1984.
