Archives of the Campaign against Military Research on Campus

CAMROC aims, campaigning material, minutes, bulletins, newsletters, correspondence and membership material. Publicity including press releases and resulting press coverage. Correspondence, publications, notes and press coverage concerning research into military research at UK universities and polytechnics. Correspondence with individual students, student groups, campaigning groups and other organisations. Material including correspondence, drafts, publicity for "The campus connection" and other publications. Correspondence, notes, press cuttings concerning university contracts with the British Ministry of Defence and the United States military, particularly concerning SDI "Star Wars".

The Campaign against Military Research on Campus (CAMROC) was launched in May 1986 to expose the increasing amount of military research work carried out by university academics and students: in 1986, 52% of all British government-funded research was funded by the Ministry of Defence. CAMROC was composed of peace and anti-nuclear groups, concerned individuals and student unions. As well as trying to uncover the amount of military research being carried out in academic institutions, the campaign was working for more openness about military-related contracts and for a transfer of resources from military to civil research. Much of the work involved collecting and collating publicly-available information on research contracts, in conjunction with the British Society for Social Responsibility in Science. As part of the campaign, CAMROC was able to highlight research contracts awarded to universities where the contract was related to chemical and biological warfare. In 1989 CAMROC merged with Student CND.

Access to archive material is subject to preservation requirements and must also conform to the restrictions of the Data Protection Act and any other appropriate legislation. This archive contains extensive personal data on individuals throughout and access is therefore restricted under the Act. At present this applies to the whole archive. More detailed cataloguing will make it possible to refine this restriction. Researchers should contact the Special Collections Librarian for information about the status of the material they wish to view.
