Administrative / Biographical History

This private bank was established in 1778 as Wilkins, Jeffreys, Wilkins & Williams. It was also known as Brecon Old Bank. Of the four original partners, Walter and Jeffreys Wilkins had worked abroad with the East India Company. The firm largely served the local agricultural community and opened branches throughout South Wales: Merthyr Tydfil (1812), Haverfordwest (1832), Carmarthen (1834), Cardigan (1835), Llanelli (1837), Aberdare (1854), Cardiff (1856) and Dowlais (1875). It was acquired by Lloyds in 1890.
