Scope and Content

This oral history collection comprises 19 interviews. The interviews were conducted in the Elder's first language and comprise of lengthy but informal conversations focusing on childhood, early years, migration and settlement in Leicester. The Elders reflect on and interpret the memories and events of their lives. The interviews are intended to capture something of the experiences of a generation of people who made the often difficult transition to a life in Britain from the Indian sub-continent and East Africa.

Administrative / Biographical History

The Ethnic Elders collection was undertaken by the Ethnicity Research Centre (University of Leicester, Sociology Department) in 1999, as the first of a number of research projects on the life histories and oral testimony of Ethnic Elders. The interviews are drawn from a range of Asian communities in Leicester. The Ethnic Elders project was funded by "Ethnic Elders 2000".
