Edward Greenly, Bangor papers

The collection contains originals and transcript copies of letters, (December 1890 - August 1891), between Dr Edward Greenly and Annie Barnard, from the period of their engagement until their marriage in August 1891. The letters are intense and passionate and reflect the couple's interest in spiritual and theological matters as well as Edward Greenly's work as a geologist. The transcripts were written and edited by Edward Greenly, ca 1935.

There is also a transcript of Edward Greenly's memoir to the life and work of Dr Griffith Evans, (1835-1935), a Meirioneth veterinary surgeon and researcher, entitled Griffith Evans, A Pathological Pioneer.

Edward Greenly, D.Sc., of Aethwy Ridge, Bangor, North Wales was born in Bristol on 3rd December 1861. Educated at Clifton College, University College, London, he joined the Geological Survey in 1889. Initially, he was engaged in geological surveying work in Scotland, in the Highlands and Sutherland. Later, his geological work took him to Anglesey and Caernarfonshire in North Wales.

He married Annie Barnard in 1891. Their correspondence and Edward Greenly's autobiographical and theological work, A Hand Through Time: Memories Romantic and Geological; Studies in the Arts and Religion and the Grounds of Confidence in Immortality, (London, T. Murby & Co., 1938) reflects the couple's common interests and devotion to each other, throughout their marriage.

Dr Greenly was an honorary member of the Geological Societies of Edinburgh and Liverpool and the Anglesey Antiquarian Society. He was awarded the Lyell Medal by the Geological Society in 1920 and the medal of Liverpool Geological Society in 1933. He died in 1951.

Papers were received on three separate occasions and as a result have been catalogued as separate groups and incorporated into the General Collection of Bangor Manuscripts . Within each group the arrangement is according to type and then chronological.
