Archives of the Manchester University Egyptian and Oriental Society, comprising records of its predecessor societies, the Manchester Egyptian Association and the Manchester Oriental Society. The collection also includes material from the Manchester and District Branch of the Society for Hebraic Studies and the Manchester University Department of Semitic Studies.
The collection is incomplete. The main components are: Manchester Egyptian Association, minutes, 1906-1912; Manchester Oriental Society, minutes, 1910-1912, membership book, financial transactions, c.1913-1921, newscuttings, c.1910; Manchester Oriental and Egyptian Society (Manchester University Egyptian and Oriental Society from 1935), minutes, 1912-1961, miscellaneous notes and receipts, c.1940-1946, essays presented to Rev. Dr I.W. Slotki (1884-1973) Hebrew educationalist, scholar and minister, on his 80th birthday, and related correspondence, 1964-1965; Manchester and District Branch of the Society for Hebraic Studies, Journals, 1917-1945; papers relating to the Manchester University Department of Semitic Studies seminars in Old Testament studies, 1945-1959; manuscript volumes of related material; miscellaneous printed books and periodicals, some containing articles by Professor Maurice A. Canney; a small number of photographs (portraits), early 20th century; and press cuttings from newspapers and magazines, mainly relating to India and Siam, c.1857-1912.
A number of the professors and lecturers of the University's Department of Theology were members of the constituent societies, Maurice A. Canney, Thomas Fish and Harold Henry Rowley amongst others, as were various clerics, such as the Roman Catholic Bishop of Salford, Louis Casartelli. Some of the minute books, particularly those relating to Hebraic and Semitic Studies, give an insight into papers and lectures delivered to the respective societies.
