Scope and Content

The papers comprise:

  • An unpublished manuscript bibliography of written works about Nottinghamshire by John Thomas Godfrey. The bibliography was to be published by subscription under the title 'Bibliotheca Nottinghamiensis', undated, c.1891 (MS 654/1).
  • An unpublished manuscript volume entitled 'Lineal Descents of Peers and Baronets concerned with the County of Nottinghamshire', November 1887 (MS 654/2).
  • Printed pamphlet entitled 'Notes on the bibliography of Nottinghamshire' by John T. Godfrey, 1891 (MS 654/3).

Administrative / Biographical History

John Thomas Godfrey of Lenton, Nottinghamshire, was born in 1857. He was a historian of Nottinghamshire publishing abstracts of marriages in parishes in the county, and histories of churches in Lenton and Nottingham and in the hundreds of Rushcliffe and Bingham. Godfrey received part of his financial backing for publication from Mr James Ward. Ward also purchased manuscripts about Nottinghamshire and employed Godfrey to edit and transcribe them. Godfrey died in 1911. He was a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society.

Custodial History

One item in the collection has a separate provenance. 'Lineal Descents' (MS 654/2) bears the bookplates of John T. Godfrey and Christopher Barber Collinson. It was purchased by the University of Nottingham's library in Spetember 1995.
