QueenSpark Books was an extension of QueenSpark, a street newspaper first published in 1972 which had grown out of the campaign to turn the disused Georgian spa in Queen's Park, Brighton, into a nursery school. The first title, Poverty - hardship but happiness. Those were the days 1903-1917 by Albert Paul, appeared in 1974. A volume from the late 1980s says: 'QueenSpark is a community writing and publishing group based in East Brighton. We believe that anyone can be a writer and aim to encourage and publish writing by people who do not normally get into print. QueenSpark is not a commercial company. We have some part-time paid workers, but we are mainly volunteers who work together to write and make books, gaining and sharing skills and confidence as we go.' QueenSpark Books has been particularly associated with the Lewis Cohen Urban Studies Centre at Brighton Polytechnic (now the University of Brighton).

The collection is open to all bona fide researchers, by appointment only, telephone or email a week in advance of your intended visit. Researchers must abide by the conditions protecting the collection.

Donated by QueenSpark Books to the Mass-Observation Archive Trust which has deposited the collection in the University of Sussex Library.
