Scope and Content

A memoranda book belonging to George Drake, included in which are references relating to his working life and sketches of various cycle parts. Typescript extracts from the volume and typescript biographical details of George Drake, also a photograph and photocopies of his birth and death certificates.

Administrative / Biographical History

George Drake was born in Sheffield in 1839 and joined the Amalgamated Society of Engineers on August 1st 1859. His work took him around England, France and Germany. He began his career as a fitter, then moved into small-arms tool making and eventually into the safety cycle business until his death in August 1899.
