Administrative / Biographical History
In the final months of her life, Britain's longest-reigning monarch was greeted by thousands of well-wishers and much fanfare in Holyhead. Queen Victoria visited the town, where "arrangements had been made on the most elaborate scale to give her Majesty a most enthusiastic welcome", on her way to Ireland in April 1900. "The streets of Holyhead were crowded with people, many of whom had arrived on the previous night," wrote the Holyhead Mail and Anglesey Herald, as it was then known. The town had been profusely decorated. Almost every street displayed a plentiful supply of flags and banners...waving out of every window. At nine o'clock, the Royal train steamed slowly into the station, and a great cheer was raised by the crowd of eager spectators. The Queen, then 80 years old, showed some signs of frailty, but was heartily supported by the townspeople. "Her Majesty walked with a firm step, and the onlookers broke into cheers of the wildest enthusiasm in witnessing the pathetically venerable figure crossing the carpeted platform to the yacht," reported the newspaper. Nine months later, on January 22, 1901, Queen Victoria died after more than 63 years on the throne.
