Administrative/Biographical History
John and Daniel Smallwood were a Birmingham firm established in Leopold Street, 1810. They manufactured metal and wooden rules, squares and levels. The firm remained within the same family, only becoming limited in 1952. It was one of the most prominent manufacturers of rule makers in the 19th century and was one of very few still in existence in the 1960s.

This collection was acquired from the firm by the Faculty Research Fellow in the Faculty of Commerce and Social Science, University of Birmingham in 1965, who presented them to the Special Collections Department.
