Scope and Content

Correspondence of the Merivale family, mainly of Walter Merivale and his wife in India, 1881-1889, Costa Rica, 1890-1892 and Barbados, 1894-1899. Letters to and from many different members of the family were circulated and retained by Walter and Maggie. The principal family correspondents are Charles Merivale, his wife and their children.

Administrative / Biographical History

The members of the Merivale family represented in this collection are Walter Merivale (1855-1902), railway engineer, and his wife Emma Magdalene (1854-1940), known as Maggie; Charles Merivale (1808-93), Dean of Ely, and his wife Judith (ne Frere), their daughters Maria Sophia (Sophy) and Judith Anne, and sons John Herman and Charles.
