Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
The Welsh Theatre Company was established in Cardiff in 1962 by the Welsh Arts Council under the directorship of Warren Jenkins; most of their productions were in English. Wilbert Lloyd Roberts, Head of Drama at the BBC in Cardiff, had directed Welsh-language productions with a group of Welsh actors jointly employed by the company and the BBC. He left the BBC to become director of the Welsh language section of the company, thereafter known as Cwmni Theatr Cymru, based in Bangor, Caernarfonshire. Cwmni Theatr Cymru was a touring company which played to small, local venues, but in 1975 moved into Theatr Gwynedd. The management of the theatre and company were closely connected. The company formed 'Adran Antur', a group of young actors who wanted to produce work of a more experimental nature, and Cymdeithas Theatr Cymru (The Welsh Theatre Society), to promote Welsh theatre and circulate information through a network of local representatives and area committees. Cwmni Theatr Cymru closed in 1982 due to financial difficulties.
