Scope and Content

This collection comprises papers and photographs of Eliza Hope as a CMS missionary nurse in China, 1912-1936. It includes a record of probationary nurses at the CMS Hospital in Hing Hwa where she worked, an album containing photographs of hospital staff and patients, and a typescript copy of The Story of Christian Nursing in China by Sister Gladys Stephenson with manuscript notes by Eliza Hope.

Administrative / Biographical History

Eliza Vachell Krauss, later known as Hope (1879-1968) was employed as a private governess and as a nurse at Guy's Hospital. She was accepted as a missionary by the Church Missionary Society (CMS) in 1912 and sailed for the Fukien Mission in China in that year. She served at the CMS Hospital at Hing Hwa until her resignation from the CMS in 1936. She changed her name to Eliza Vachell Hope in October 1918 and she also appears to have been known by the name of Elsie Hope.
