Written in a large flowing hand, the author's autograph. Inscription inside front cover: "J. Spencer Stanhope / Paris Jany. 1818 / Rue de la Chause d'Autun / 58." Stationer's name and address on label pasted inside front cover: "Charpentier, Rue du Mont-Blanc, No.6." Bound in red-covered boards, green spine.

John Spencer-Stanhope, 1787-1873, of Cannon Hall, Barnsley and Horsforth Hall, was the son of Walter Spencer-Stanhope and his wife, Mary Winifred, daughter of Thomas Babington Pulleine. In 1822, he married Lady Elizabeth Wilhelmina Coke, daughter of the Earl of Leicester. For a number of years he acted as a Justice of the Peace in Horsforth
