Scrapbook of original sketches, cuttings and illustrations from the midlands area, 1860-1930

The scrapbook contains a variety of material, mainly extracted from other sources but including some original work. It includes:

Sketches in pencil and pen by 'SF' and 'E. China', of: the Old Seven Stars Inn, the Vicarage, the Church and Standon School in Standon, Staffordshire; Sneinton Castle, Nottinghamshire; Weston Coyney Hall, Staffordshire; church and churchyard at Darley in the Dale, Derbyshire; river view at Matlock Bridge, Derbyshire; Willersley Bridge on the River Derwent near Cronford, Derbyshire; St Michael's Church at Colwich, Staffordshire; and St Thomas's Church at a location unknown. 1860-1863;

Engravings cut from newspapers and journals depicting Dresden in Germany; dogs and horses; an avenue of trees accompanied by a poem by 'H.M.T.'; a coronation (in colour); Brailes church in Warwickshire; Trentham church, Staffordshire; tomb of Sir Walter Scott, view of the beach at Brighton; Mercrusse Abbey; Smuggler's Cave; Erthig, Denbighshire; Hurst Castle; Grotto and Cave; Richmond, Surrey; and children rioting in a school (in colour). Undated, c. 1860-c.1880;

Newspaper cuttings comprising articles regarding: a meteor shower; Miss Linwood, a Leicester needleworker; laying the foundation stone of St Luke's parish school, Nottingham; Coaguline cement; cure for cholera; bells in St John the Baptist church, Bromsgrove; memory of a fox hunt in the Cotswolds by Lord Coventry; Kempsey church, Worcestershire; the Wylde family of Worcester and Kempsey; stage superstitions; Francis Henry Macklin, actor; Edward Terry, actor; facial make-up; 'An Unequal match', a play; the Eaton and Clarke families of Nottingham; a poem to the departing vicar of St Mary's church, Nottingham; poem entitled: 'Epithalmium to Mr S...M...'; poem entitled 'Church of our vicars'; and details of vicars at St Luke's church, Nottingham including the Rev. H.E. Daniel. 1866-1929;

Newspaper cuttings comprising photographs depicting: Hartlebury Castle, Worcestershire; Old Worcester prison; Lord Coventry and his family; market day at Lodbury, Herefordshire; widening Worcester Bridge; Worcestershire cave dwellers; Rock Church, Worcestershire; carved Roman stone at Colchester; Madresfield Court, Malvern; extension of Worcester city boundary; flooding at Worcester; Bewdley, Worcestershire; old mill at Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire; Worcester, Ludlow and Bridgenorth from the air; Malvern Hill quarries; blind rowing crew; St John the Baptist church, Bromsgrove; Huddington Court, Worcester; the Bishop of Pershore; Ombersley and Tenbury, Worcestershire; fisherman in Tewkesbury; Lord Beauchamp and his family; and Oystermouth Castle. 1926-1930;

Manuscript items comprising: a poem called 'The Blush' by 'W.E.'; and 'Sulphate of Lime in Choleraie Diarrehea' by 'R. Ramler'. Undated, c. 1850.

The identities of the compiler of the scrapbook and the creators of the sketches inside are unknown. Detailed research into the material which has been collected might enable an identification.

No archival arrangement has been necessary.
