Papers of Professor Herbert George Nicholas

Various papers, including material on wartime service in the Ministry of Information (American Division), 1939-1945, correspondence concerning the reduction of the 50 year closure period for Public Records, 1962-1998, material relating to the UN Advisory Group, 1964-1978, personal papers and memorabilia, mostly connected with the United States, 1935-1960, and photographs taken during visits to the United States, 1935-1969.

Professor George Herbert Nicholas (1911-1998) was educated at Mill Hill School and at New College, Oxford, where he graduated with an MA in 1938. He was a lecturer at Exeter College, Oxford, 1938 and Fellow, 1946-1951. He was a Faculty Fellow, Nuffield College, Oxford, 1948-1957 and a Nuffield Reader in the Comparative Study of Institutions, 1956-1969. From 1969 to 1978 he held the post of Rhodes Professor of American History and Institutions, Oxford University, was a Fellow of New College, 1951-1978, Emeritus, 1978-1980 and Honorary Fellow from 1980. He served as Chairman, British Association for American Studies, 1960-1962 and was Vice-President of the British Academy, 1975-1976. From 1989 to 1994 he was Director, New College Development Fund. In the United States, he worked as Visiting Professor, Brookings Institution, Washington, 1960, Albert Shaw Lecturer in Diplomatic History, John Hopkins, Baltimore, 1961, and Visiting Fellow, Institute of Advanced Studies, Princeton, 1964. He was Visiting Faculty Fellow, Institute of Politics, Harvard, 1968 and Honorary DCL, Pittsburgh, 1968. He was the author of a number of publications on British and American politics and political relations.
