Scope and Content

A volume of the sermons of Griffith Jones, in an early 19th century hand. The inscription at the end of the book suggests that the creator was a Rev. Jacob Hughes of Llanrhian, Pembrokeshire.

A biography of Griffith Jones and his influence on Wales. Presented in a Literary Competition in 1880, possibly by John Williams of Pen-Lan, Llandegai.

Administrative / Biographical History

Griffith Jones, 1683-1761, was the founder of the Welsh Circulating Schools. He himself attended the Carmarthen Grammar School and was ordained priest in 1708. He was the Rector of Llanddowror, Carmarthenshire for forty years.

Several biographers have recorded his life, including, Gwyn Davies in Griffith Jones, Llanddowror, Athro Cenedl, 1984 and Geraint H. Jenkins in Hen Filwr dros Grist.

The book of sermons was a gift from the Rev. Jacob Hughes of Llanrhian to Thomas Evans, Vicar of Llanrhystud.
