NPG - Visitor Survey Reports

This series includes reports from 1987-present. The general reports include statistical analysis of visitor numbers and visitor profile, for example their sex, age, social class, nationality, distance travelled to the Gallery and visitor satisfaction. Reports on specific exhibitions, and a report on BP arts sponsorship include more qualitative analysis of opinions about the Gallery and descriptions of visitor experiences.

The first Visitor Survey Report was created in 1987 by an academic, for the purposes of market research, and was followed by a report in 1993, carried out by students. The Gallery was examined alongside other national museums and galleries in 1992 for a report into public service provision by the National Audit Office, published in 1993. Thereafter surveys were mainly carried out by private market research companies. Surveys are carried out relating to particular Gallery exhibitions, and also to the Gallery as a whole. They were carried out sporadically, but are now carried out annually.
