Scope and Content

Letters received by John Fogg on the subject of calligraphy, including about membership of the Society for Italic Handwriting, 1960s, 1990s, and about evening classes run by the Society of Scribes & Illuminators at the Stanhope Institute on Euston Road, London, 1964-1967. Correspondents include Alfred Fairbank, Dorothy Mahoney and Heather Child.

There are also three letters apparently written by JF himself, possibly kept as samples, empty envelopes which seem to have been kept for the handwriting of the addresses, and a page from a 19th-century book annotated in a 19th-century hand.

Administrative / Biographical History

John Fogg lived in West Wickham, Kent, and pursued an interest in calligraphy through evening classes at the Stanhope Institute on Euston Road in London and membership of the Society for Italic Handwriting. He moved in 1989 to the Isle of Lewis. He seems to have first visited the Crafts Study Centre in 1990, and he gave to the Centre 'A Bestiary' and 'A New Bestiary' by Marie Angel, on long loan, the gift confirmed after his death in November 1996.
