Cairo Scientific Society (1898-1951)
The Cairo Scientific Society was established in 1898 to be a ‘society for the Promotion of Science in Egypt’ in which members presented papers at regular meetings on a wide variety of scientific subjects. The Society started to publish a monthly magazine ‘Survey Notes’ in 1906. Following the success of the first 15 issues of ‘Survey Notes’ the publishing committee decided to rename the publication ‘The Cairo Scientific Journal’ and to expand the scope of the publication to cover ‘not only information relating to one or two branches of physical science, but to invite communications on all branches of scientific knowledge.’ The Cairo Scientific Society held 392 meetings between its foundation and its closure in 1951. At its height, it consisted of over 100 members, and held fortnightly meetings. The Society lapsed during the Second World War, the last meeting occurring on April 6th, 1939, and recommencing in 1949. With the introduction by the Egyptian Government of “Society Laws” in 1949, the Society fused with the British Institute and ceased to exist as an independent entity. The last recorded meeting of the Society was the 392nd, in March 1951.
