Administrative / Biographical History
The Women's Institute Movement in Britain started in 1915. It was formed to encourage the women to be involved in growing and preserving food to help increase the supply of food during. The first WI in Britain was formed under the auspices of the Welsh Agricultural Organisation Society, in Llanfair Pwllgwyngyll, Anglesey. Individual Institutes are self-governing and are grouped into county federations that make up The National Federation of Women's Institutes. The Borth-y-Gest, Caernarfonshire, branch has been active since 1957.
