Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
The Africa Educational Trust was set up in 1958 by Michael Scott, director of the Africa Bureau, to support education in Africa, African students studying outside Africa, and research and dissemination of information about Africa. For many years the main focus of its work was the provision of study grants and scholarships for South Africans and Namibians who had suffered from apartheid. During the late 1980s and early 1990s it also supported a programme of grants and scholarships for African refugees in Britain. Subsequently however, it devoted a greater proportion of its efforts to supporting education in Africa, its main beneficiaries being girls and young women without access to education, children in schools in areas of conflict, young ex-militia men without education or vocational training, and young men and women working with local organisations, etc. in conflict situations.
