Scope and Content

The collection consists of birth and marriage certificates; family trees compiled by family members; school reports for HOJ and his daughter Denise; wartime papers and documents relating to Hugh Owen Jones; telegrams; identity cards; ration books; photographs and miscellaneous items.

Administrative / Biographical History

Hugh Owen Jones was born in May 1915 in Llandudno, the great grandson of Sarah Brookes, one of the pioneers of the bathing huts which operated on the North Shore at Llandudno. He married Laura Williams and they had two children: Raymond born in 1935 and Denise born in 1938.

HOJ joined the Royal Welsh Fusiliers but at some point between July and August 1944 he became a member of the Royal Scots Fusiliers, although the reason for this is unclear. On August 4th 1944 HOJ was tragically killed in action in North West Europe and was buried in the Bayeux British Cemetery, 16 miles North West of Caen in France.
