The documents concern four turnpike roads passing through Darlington, Co. Durham: the Post Road from Boroughbridge to Durham; the road from Stockton to Barnard Castle via Winstone; the Coal Road from Darlington to West Auckland; and the road from Cockerton Bridge to Staindrop. Apart from a few leases of turnpike houses and toll bars, and 2 documents about the bridge over Baydale Beck, they are all concerned with the practice of financing the roads by mortgaging tolls.
