The Bishopsgate Volunteers were formed on 1 May 1798 under the command of Sir Richard Carr Glyn, partner in Glyn, Mills, Hallifax & Co, bankers of London, to defend the capital against threatened French invasion. Within a year the unit boasted some 140 volunteers. From 1 June 1799 volunteers of various City companies amalgamated into larger units and the Bishopsgate Volunteers became part of North East Division of Loyal London Volunteers. This unit was disbanded in 1802, after the peace of Amiens.
