Higgon family deeds and estate papers

Deeds and estate papers relating to the Higgon estate in Pembrokeshire, 1549-1898; sale particulars; 1788-1869; papers relating to collieries, 1844-1849; estate management records, 1853-1901; accounts, 1753-1911; solicitor's accounts, 1840-1879; family papers, 1818-1909; correspondence and papers about local schools and churches, 1847-1898; papers relating to hunting, 1826-1891; papers relating to the Pembrokeshire Conservative Association and elections, 1837-1892; and tithe papers, 1838-1869. A further group includes deeds, diaries, letters and personal papers, 1756-1857.

The Higgon family had resided at Scolton, Pembrokeshire, since at least the 16th century. The first recorded member of the family to live there was James Higgon (d. 1732). His grandson, the Rev. James Higgon, (1713-1799) married Mary, daughter and co-heiress of an M. Philipps of Ford, although there is no evidence relating to the ownership of the property by the Higgon family. The estate descended in the male line until John Donald George Higgon, who died in 1898. His wife, Edith Emily Higgon, succeeded to Scolton. She died in 1937.

Arranged into the following: deeds and estate papers, accounts, correspondence, family papers, hunting; military, Conservative Association and elections, papers and correspondence on Whitland and Cardigan Railway Company, and tithe papers; and a second group of diaries, letters and personal papers, and other papers.
